The music that accompanies the short was developed from a version of the well-known song "Over the Rainbow" from the film The Wizard of Oz and as a tribute to Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwoʻole's performance of the song. Lava is inspired by the beauty of tropical islands and oceanic volcanoes. James Ford Murphy directed this animated short that was released in 2015 alongside the feature film Inside Out.
